What Are People’s Perceptions of Open Relationships?

Studies performed at the University of Michigan revealed, perhaps unsurprisingly, that people hold negative stereotypes of non-monogamous relationships. This is true despite the fact that an estimated 4.3-10.5% of all relationships are non-monogamous. Presented with two happy couples, one monogamous and the other non-monogamous, participants in one of the studies were more likely to identify the non-monogamous couple as being more risky and their relationship as being less meaningful. The non-monogamous couple was also thought more likely to perform more poorly in other aspects of life, including being less likely to pay taxes on time or keeping in good dental hygiene.
