Can texting increase intimacy in your relationship?

Last Sunday I shared a study that said that texting and other digital communication decreased face-to-face communication and hurt relationships. No surprise. (Texting Officially Disastrous to Relationships Says Study). But could communicating by text be better than not communicating at all? In modern times, can modern relationships benefit from texting by building ongoing intimacy throughout the day? Researchers at Brigham Young University found that sending loving text messages helps increase a person’s sense of satisfaction in the relationship. The caveat/warning is to not send too many messages so your partner is distracted, and don’t text during an argument because the tone and meaning of words can be misunderstood too easily when emotions are on high. So which is it? Is texting good or bad for relationships? Could it depend on timing and content? Loving, sexy texts can build anticipation throughout the work day and make you feel closer to your partner. When clear communication is critical to maintaining a healthy relationship or to healing from an injury to the relationship, in person voice communication might be necessary.
