Emotional affairs don’t always lead to divorce, but honesty plays an important role. Psychologist Barry McCarthy says, “In the course of an emotional affair, you open the window to your affair partner and wall off your spouse. To repair the marriage, you must open your windows to your partner and wall off the affair.” McCarthy also advocates a quick return to sexual intimacy to help rebuild the relationship and develop trust. It’s also critical to talk about the situation so that healing can begin; it can seem like too much emphasis, however, open conversations can be soothing for the injured party.
