Barry W. McCarthy, Ph.D. discusses changing attitudes in how extra-marital affairs are treated in therapy, saying the book Getting Past the Affair by Snyder, Baucom, and Gordon is the “gold-standard” on this topic. McCarthy says a key element of this new approach involves the construction of a new sexual style for the couple. He writes, “The challenge is to build a stronger, more resilient sexual desire, pleasure, eroticism, and satisfaction.” McCarthy claims the focus on marital sexuality enables couples to move beyond betrayal and obsession and focus on healing and building a strong relationship in the present.
