Rachel and Clark have been in a relationship with each other for three years, are living together, and have decided to get married—non-legally. Before Rachel met Clark, she was in a serious and emotional relationship with another woman. Their feelings were so strong that they also wanted to be married, except the laws of Louisiana do not allow same-sex marriages. Though Rachel now finds herself in a loving and government-approved relationship, past experience has led her to question the institution and to wonder how much importance government sanction actually has for her compared to the vows of love exchanged by two people.
