Why Get Married? These Answers May Surprise You.

Monogamy may be culturally dominant today, but it hasn’t always been. Monogamy has evolved because of its benefits, says Joseph Henrich of the University of British Columbia. Henrich’s study identifies five reasons for monogamous marriage: It reduces crime, as the competition between men for multiple women is gone. It benefits girls, because the age for marriage rises. It’s good for the economy, because men invest in the workforce. More peaceful households result, because women are not put in the position to compete with co-wives. Finally, children benefit from having a father who has more time to devote to them.
