Over 10,000 Couples Were Given Licenses in the First Year of Gay Marriage

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg recently observed the anniversary of the Marriage Equality Act, saying “New York has always been a great place to get married. Now that we’ve achieved marriage equality more and more couples…are coming here to get hitched.” Bloomberg acknowledged that there is still much to be done to achieve full equality, citing the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Although over 10,000 same-sex marriage licenses were issued, couples are not required to identify their sex, so the number is probably higher. Bloomberg’s likely successor, Speaker Christine Quinn, praised him for supporting the city’s L.G.B.T. community.
