APA Guidelines for Working with Transgender Clients

You may have noticed if you’ve been reading my blog that I have been trying to actively pursue information, real life stories and experience and educating myself about transgender individuals and the challenges they face. I am trying hard to understand the difficulties they face and  improve the care I can give to my clients. Oppression takes many forms, and one of the ways transgender patients are marginalized is through lack of access to quality, trans-affirmative medical and mental health care.

The APA has published guidelines for therapists working with transgender patients. I hope this helps my fellow therapists to better understand the struggles transgender and non-conforming individuals often face in so many aspects of their lives; from harassment and discrimination in education and the workplace to their interpersonal relationships. Being able to be open with care providers without fear of discrimination or rejection is essential.

I hope these guidelines will contribute to the reduction of stigma and discrimination against transgender people in mental health care. If we can continue to educate ourselves and others and be open to the life experiences of those dealing with discrimination we can make progress in the fight for equality for all.
