According to Jan Stevens, the most effective way to build relationship trust is to be consistent in every facet of the relationship, including your behavior and how you treat your partner. She writes, “What causes suspicion in relationships are sudden changes, especially in behavior.” Examples of sudden behavioral changes include starting to dress differently, losing a large amount of weight, or taking on new interests. Communicating about any changes you make is crucial; otherwise your partner may feel he doesn’t know you anymore. Stevens does encourage surprise getaways or other treats, and says being consistent doesn’t have to be boring.
