AFTA Statement on Reversing the Bathroom Order for Transgender Students

Trump’s recent action to rescind former President Obama’s school bathroom order has put our transgender and gender nonconforming (TG/NC) youth at renewed and heightened risk, both for violence and discrimination, but also for suicide, mental illness, and self-harm.

The American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) recently issued a statement supporting the rights of these students. I appreciate them stepping up. Family therapists can and should help protect the rights and safety of all students, especially those who are the most vulnerable.

I stand with the AFTA in their stance against Trump’s Executive Order and support any efforts to help reverse that decision.

You can read the full text of the AFTA statement here. If you agree that we need to stand united in our demand for safe and affirming school environments for ALL children, please let AFTA know.

And reach out to your Congress people.  You, too, can make your voice heard.
