AASECT and ISTI Certification pathways

Couples’ discussions of relationship difficulties and sexuality often resemble a well-worn path with the familiar ruts and bumps of cognition (narrative), affect, and body postures.  This path, while familiar, is fraught with miscommunication. Often what one partner intends to communicate is interpreted differently by the other partner based on their own history and preconceived notions.

Jennifer Gardner explores how the couples’ therapist can help couples notice their communication patterns as they emerge and use small, body-based dialog and experiments to highlight and shift patterns that support change. Gain insight into the developmental movements and other somatic techniques to highlight and challenge the narrative created by the ways we communicate.

Learning Objectives:

In this training, participants will:

  1. Recognize the importance of using present moment experiences to highlight patterns of couples’ implicit communication affecting intimacy and sexuality;
  2. Employ techniques of noticing and making contact to present moment experience;
  3. Utilize observer dialog to help partners recognize implicit patterns and how they are present outside of therapeutic hour;
  4. Understand how small, present-moment experiments can help deepen and expand couples’ understanding of communication patterns;
  5. Develop a vocabulary for experiments using the developmental movement patterns;
  6. Explore how experiential exercises with couples can be useful in exploring high-conflict topics and sexuality;
  7. Use psychoeducation to encourage couples to move beyond the narrative and toward a more embodied view of healing.
