Modern relationships today take many forms. They are created intentionally, with honesty, transparency, and with equality. The challenge for therapists is to help with therapeutic acumen, free of judgment, creating an environment of safety, where personal and relational integrity can lead to positive outcomes.  This course gives therapists the tools to guide couples and individuals through commitment, and individualism while maneuvering through conflict. The course looks at the role of historical, contemporary, and future relationship styles and will review ways sustainable and flexible monogamy agreements can contribute positively to relational change.  Therapists can learn to guide without judgment, examining their own biases and countertransference. The course includes special guest speaker Georgia Berry discussing ‘Owning a Swing Club.’

Explore contemporary styles of monogamy and open relationships and learn tools to help couples communicate, and create them intentionally, with honesty, transparency, and equality.

Identify how to help clients co-create their ideal relationship agreements after conflict and betrayal.

Expand understanding of sustainable relationships in various forms by identifying explicit dialogues couples can use to create positive outcomes in potentially conflictual relationships.

Learning Objectives:

In this training, participants will:

    1. Understand monogamy issues as relational dilemmas and how specific behavioral interventions can decrease conflict in therapy;
    2. Identify specific behavioral interventions for open monogamy as they relate to dilemmas such as betrayal, trauma, and infidelity;
    3. Understand how monogamy agreements affect and inform treatment interventions;
    4. Understand interventions for couples who want to create a new vision for their recovery and evaluate how this informs treatment outcomes;
    5. Evaluate a case study to analyze the efficacy of an intervention with a couple creating a new monogamy agreement for their recovery.
