Jan 27 (Wed) 9 am – 5 pm (EST) – Intro to Sex Therapy I and II with Dr. Tammy Nelson

Sex therapists need training and tools to intervene with sexual dilemmas. Based on clinical practice, research, and case examples, we will cover the history of sex therapy and counseling interventions and how these impact current therapy techniques.  This class will help participants create a vision for their own clinical work, and foster effective, ethical therapeutic relationships both with their clients and their colleagues.

The dilemmas for therapists working with couples and sex can trigger countertransference, projection, and hopelessness for the therapist and couples can face frustration and repeat patterns that lead to destructive behaviors individually and with a partner. We will cover how CBT and the groundwork for sex therapy models can integrate with countertransference awareness to create a solid foundation for sexuality counseling. We will review the PLISSIT model and how it applies to all sex therapy today.

Topics: Ethics for the Sex Therapist
Self as Therapist/Human Sexuality
Climate change and mental health
What is Sexuality Counseling
CBT and Sex Therapy
PLISSIT model
Countertransference

Jan 28 (Thu) 9 am – 12 pm (EST) – Sex in the System: Opening Up to Systemic Thinking in Sex Therapy with Dan Rosen, LCSW

Often the therapist-client or therapist-couple dynamic is not sufficient to enact significant change in our clients’ sexual and relational lives. We need to engage a wider view of influences on the system and/or engage in collaboration with other providers of various disciplines to support real change. In this training, we explore how to open up to working with an expanded system for change.

Topics: Sexual Health Issues for Women
Desire, Pain, Arousal, Orgasm, Pleasure
Treating Sexual Pain
Treating Orgasmic Issues

Jan 28 (Thu) 1 pm – 5 pm (EST) – Intro to Sex Therapy Issues: From Multicultural Literacy to Intercultural Proficiency with Dr. Sara Nasserzadeh

CARE (Cultural Attitude Reassessment and Engagement) as a working model is inspired by SAR (sexuality Attitude Reassessment) to address two main concerns that I hear often from colleagues regarding offering culturally responsive therapy are: 1) How to paint a realistic collage of clients’ social location and get to the roots of constructs of their truths; and 2) How to be respectful and help clients progress without operating from a place of know-it-all.

Topics: Sexual Health Issues for Women
Desire, Pain, Arousal, Orgasm, Pleasure
Treating Sexual Pain
Treating Orgasmic Issues

Sex History and Assessment – Basic

Jan 29 (Fri) 2 pm – 5 pm (EST) – Skills Development Training in Sex Therapy Assessment with Dan Rosen, LCSW

In this highly experiential training, participants will review core elements of the sex and couples therapy assessment process. Emphasis will be on listening to couples and using assessment questions to build the therapeutic alliance and gather information required for treatment. Attention will be brought to the clinicians’ countertransference and skills which participants wish to further develop.

Jan 30 (Sat) 9 am – 5 pm (EST) – Confronting Shame and Embracing Good Enough Sex with Barry McCarthy, Ph.D.

This workshop focuses on complex clinical cases with the theme of confronting sexual secrets and shame and being a proud survivor. We will explore clinical issues, including:

1. Resistance adopting the Good Enough Sex (GES) model
2. Confronting a history of sexual trauma
3. Adopting the responsive sexual desire strategy
4. Implementing the desire/pleasure/eroticism/satisfaction mantra
5. Confronting the traditional male-female double standard and replacing it with female-male sexual equity
6. Being a “wise man” who enjoys sexuality in his 60’s, 70’, and 80’s.
7. Determining whether his sexual orientation is homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual+

In addition, we will emphasize the importance of an individualized relapse prevention for male and couple sexual problems.
