After an affair, most couples struggle with issues around rebuilding trust, earning forgiveness, and moving toward a shared future. As a therapist, it’s easy to feel ineffective or lost in the treatment. Common dilemmas in affair recovery often surface around secret keeping, both in the therapy as well as in the primary relationship. Forgiveness can be a stuck place as well. In this class, we’ll learn how to help couples work through these major stumbling blocks. This two-part class will address questions such as:
After an affair:
- is it best to work with partners individually or as a couple?
- how are secrets managed in couples therapy?
- what are the advantages and disadvantages of revealing an affair?
- how can partners constructively talk about the details of the affair?
- what does it mean to forgive?
- is forgiveness necessary?
- can trust be rebuilt (in cyberspace and in the flesh)?
- how do couples work towards forgiveness?
This workshop will provide a radical model of treatment for affair recovery and provide concrete exercises for guiding couples through the healing process.
