What caused humans to turn to monogamy?

Two studies recently published their findings regarding the origins of monogamy, and it turns out they disagree with each other. One says mammals started practicing social monogamy to protect young offspring from other males, another says it was due to protecting reproductive rights – making sure a female’s offspring is the males. It’s an interesting debate – what’s your hunch?
