Independence Day means freedom (of marriage) for all

Today America celebrates Independence Day, when we as a nation declared our freedom and our independence from Britain. In the Declaration of Independence, our founding fathers stated that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator certain inalienable rights – Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Whenever a Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter it.

Voters, organizations, and politicians across this nation have been moving to alter our local and national governments to allow or ban same-sex marriage. As of this writing there are 19 states plus DC that have adopted full marriage equality and 3 states with civil unions or domestic partnerships. Meanwhile, there are still 33 states and territories that ban all types of unions except one-man-one-woman couples.

Washington State is one of the most recent state governments to pass full marriage equality and a group of naysayers are petitioning to have the decision revoked. Steve Litzow, a Republican State Senator, wrote a wonderful article for Huffington Post explaining why he and other fellow Washington State Senators came to the decision that government should not be able to decide who people marry.
