Working with Your Most Challenging Couples: Anger, Narcissism and Countertransference
This course will offer therapists and providers insight for helping clients understand how narcissism in a partner can create emotional intensity and challenges for the therapist. We will show how to use cognitive restructuring, re-parenting work, attachment and behavioral-skills training to assess the hot buttons in the therapy and in the couple’s relationship. We will work on managing triggered reactions like aggression and anger toward the partner in the session and at home.
Practitioners will gain understanding of coping styles that manifest as bravado but really are a mask for inadequacy, intolerable shame, sadness and loneliness. This understanding will allow you to set limits with your narcissistic client and create new treatment goals along with new insight into your own feelings and how to manage and empower yourself as the provider.
We will develop strategies for working with couples where narcissism impacts both them and us. Each teleclass session will integrate questions and cases from participants.
